FredT300B > This 2-way monitor is based on a the Dayton Audio 1-1/8" silk dome tweeter and a 6-1/2" woofer. It was designed to provide a low cost, easy to build 2-way system for the speaker building novice. The end result is a kit that can be built in a couple of hours and has a sound that will rival mass market speakers costing two or three times its price. The sound of the BR-1 is smooth and detailed, with a convincing soundstage. The tonal balance is on the warm side of neutral. Most other small mass-market speakers lack bass extension and substitute a boomy peak in the 60-80hz range to compensate for this shortcoming. The BR-1's bass extends into the mid 40's and is slightly ovedamped (tight) due to an extended bass shelf ported alignment, which is unusual for a system of this size.
FredT300B > The kit includes all the parts needed to build a pair of speakers. Crossover parts are a much higher quality than other speakers in this price range and are better than those found in speakers costing ten time as much like the Vandersteen 2Ce Sig and the Magnepan 1.6QR. They include Solen perfect layer air core inductors, metallized polypropylene caps and non-inductive resistors.
FredT300B > The Dayton Audio DC28F-8 1-1/4" silk dome tweeter test results are very close to the $46 Morel tweeter that it closely resembles. Specifications: * Power handling: 50 watts RMS/75 watts max * Voice coil diameter: 1-1/8" * Nominal impedance: 8 ohms * DC resistance: 5.4 ohms * Frequency response (± 2 dB): 2,000-20,000 Hz * Fs: 907 Hz * SPL: 89 dB 1W/1m * Magnet weight: 6 oz. * Dimensions: Overall Diameter: 4-5/16", Cutout Diameter: 3-1/8", Mounting Depth: 1-1/8", Magnet Diameter: 2-3/4", Magnet Height: 1-1/8".
FredT300B > The 6-1/2" Dayton Audio DC160-8 treated cone woofer has a non-pressed treated paper cone, ASV voice coil, vented pole piece, rubber surround, coated cloth dust caps, and excellent low frequency performance. Specifications: * Power handling: 50 watts RMS/75 watts max * Voice coil diameter: 1-3/8" * Voice coil inductance: 1.40 mH * Impedance: 8 ohms * DC resistance: 6.0 ohms * Frequency response: 33-4,000 Hz * Magnet weight: 15 oz. * Fs: 33 Hz * SPL: 88 dB 1W/1m * Vas: .98 cu. ft. * Qms: 2.75 * Qes: .37 * Qts: .33 * Xmax: 3.15mm * Net weight: 3 lbs. * Dimensions: Overall Diameter: 6-1/2", Cutout Diameter: 5-3/4", Mounting Depth: 3-3/16", Magnet Diameter: 4", Magnet Height: 1-3/16".
FredT300B > This is a picture of an assembled stock crossover. Notice the resistors are elevated off the circuit board for better heat dissipation when the speakers are played at continuous high levels. Heavier parts like the inductors are hot-glued to the boards for added security. One easy $40/pr upgrade for this crossover is to replace the Dayton tweeter capacitor (seen in the upper right corner behind the diagonally positioned inductor) with a Clarity SA, the same cap used in Esoteric and BG Nautilus speakers.
