Family room - 19th century mahogany campaign style lap desk on stand (not original to the piece), shown in the fully open position.
A rare 16th century English indenture contract with wax seals, executed during the reign of Elizabeth I. Appropriate to the age of the document, a handpainted rendition of Shakespeare's birthplace in Stratford Upon Avon is depicted on the shade of the antique floor lamp in the foreground.
Definitely not an antique, but it was so right for the spot that we bought it at an "antique" auciton for $135. It's an English piece, circa 1960's or later, designed in the gothic tradition. Henry VIII in the alcove feels right at home here.
